Biscuitology 2014.

How about a Cheddar Bay NCAA pool you ask?  Sure why not. Rather than futzing around with a homegrown app or plugin or spreadsheet… let’s just go with the winner.  I’ve always loved Yahoo’s tech proficiency with their sports games so let’s use them. Browns’ moves confuse ESPN.

Browns made a couple moves yesterday and dammit I let myself get tweaked by a douche-y ESPN column.  So I’m going to do the Dansby/Whitner eval and at the same time, I’ll try to help an ESPN national NFL writer grasp what’s going on in Berea.  For Kevin Seifert is perplexed: Speaking of age, the Browns got older at safety and...

If you can only have one…

Yesterday, our friends at Red Right 88 revived the “5 Questions in 5 Minutes” technique for creating interesting blog posts.  Perfected at Cleveland Reboot, 5-in-5 selects a handful of men of letters and poses five questions serving as a jumping off point for a regular Cleveland sports Algonquin Roundtable. There was one question in particular that seemed simple but is...

2014 Off season plan: Part 2, UFA targets.

Carrying forward the working premise from part one of this series:  I’ve got us with $30M in cap space that can be safely budgeted for 2014 free agent acquisitions.  Revising our roster graphic to reflect the transition tag for Alex Mack, I see needs at: Tier 1, no starter at position (last year’s starter gone):  OG, ILB1, SS, RB. Tier...

2014 Off season plan: Part 1, Cap talk.

“2014 Off season plan: Part 2, UFA targets” is up. Ok tumblers are clicking into place.  Now that the tagging season has passed we have a better sense of who is available, positional depth, and so we can do some better projecting of how the Browns cap and the Browns needs will look. Let’s get methodical. I’m going to break...

Baking the 2014 Browns.

We’ve got a plan and it’s baking.  We’re following the same recipe as last year and we’re 100x more optimistic that this could bear some resemblance to something Berea might actually try to put into play.  The recipe is is this: Identify gaps/holes; Inventory draft/UFAs with respect to relative strength by position; Project where the best value intersects with most...

Combine risers and fallers.

Combine is over. I shouldn’t admit this but I love the combine.  (I also shouldn’t admit that I’m that last person on Earth to discover Pharrell’s Happy song1 and if it weren’t for the combine intro music I still wouldn’t have found it.)  It’s great background noise for four days and I think NFLN does a good job with it....

Whom I’m watching at the combine.

I want to get out a quick piece on some of the prospects who caught my eye over the past year and get it out BEFORE the combine.  Nothing scientific here, just going to review the list of combine invitees and if I’ve got an opinion, I’m throwing it out there. I find this more fun to do before some...

More Hoyer, more YAC: the Bengals game tape.

As compelling as a one game tape review of Brian Hoyer was in demonstrating the folly of drafting magic beans at #4 when our long regional nightmare can be not just over but addressed by a bona fide hometown hero… the discerning Kanick readers are looking for more: I simply haven’t seen enough of Hoyer to form a solid opinion...

Before we go all in with a QB at #4…

A consensus is forming among Browns fandom that a quarterback must be taken with this year’s #4 draft pick.  You would think we were entering 2014 with Brandon Weeden and/or Colt McCoy as the incumbent starting QB. Not so fast. Brian Hoyer looked pretty good if memory serves.  Scratch that, let’s say really good.  Are we that sure anyone in...
