#CheddarBay week one; Wisc/LSU.

b99151158z.1_20131127212908_000_g0o3m52h.1-0

Last year a tall safety, this year Tanner McEvoy unseats Joel Stave as Wiscy QB.

Welcome to the first week in the 2014 Cheddar Bay season.  Rules and overview post is here.  Signup is to your right at the top of the sidebar.  We even have some helpful handicapping advice from several of our more experienced players.

In this comment thread is where you will make you six picks for the week, identify your top pick to be worth three points (versus only one point for the other picks), and you will write some commentary on why.  Doesn’t have to be huge, doesn’t have to be particularly eloquent.  But do please remember that the entire premise of this competition is the communal sharing of wisdom but the betterment of all.  So don’t mail it in.

Elyria's own.

Elyria’s own.

This week’s All-play is Wisconsin +5 vs. LSU at Houston, Saturday night.

Included in your six picks will be the Wiscy (5 point underdog) vs LSU game.  This is the weekly ‘All-play’ game and everyone picks it.  The all-play is useful both to take the collective temperature on the most interesting game of the week and also to check everyone’s cold handicapping skills.  I don’t do much in the way of previews on these typically — you don’t need my thoughts here1 — but I will say that here you have a spread covering machine in Wisconsin’s Gary Andersen versus a son of Lorain County.  Conflicting feelings abound.

Here are the official lines.

In the past we have used a site that offered a pdf-ready output for their lines and I must admit that it was convenience that was the driver for me in choosing/using them.  The Exec Committee cares not for convenience; biased toward more accurate lines.2

Reminder, here are the links to the sources of the point spreads we’re using: college pagepro page.  I lock these in Wednesday mornings, usually first thing (6-7am).  I’ve kept the live links for all the games in the pasted table below.  Good news is you can click for line moves and weather reports; bad news is that the page is going to be a bit longer to load.

If there is a game line, you can play it.  (Yes, have at it with the Abilene/GSU tilt.)  (No Pete Franklin, still no over/unders.)

Click to expand game lines. (Will be pdf embed starting next week.)

And that’s really it.  Get your essays in an hour before kickoff.  You do not have to submit all your picks at once; but do NOT use the edit feature to append to your slate.  Reply to yourself with the added picks.

Picks are worth half this week –> 0.5 points for regular wins, 1.5 points for essays.  Consider this to be your Week 3 pre-season game.

Based on the number of paid entrants and soft commits, I expect we’ll be right around the same count as last year (50-ish).  Plenty of room for more.

Annd go!

  1. Besides, my thoughts on all 128 CFB teams can be found here. [back]
  2. I’ve noticed the page is taking longer to load due to the increased html of the point spreads.  Even though the lines are collapsed, your browser still wants to load the underlying code and each game is it’s own table so there’s a lot of it.  I’ve got a fairly robust laptop on a fairly robust network.  If the pageload is problematic for you, please let me know. Since Idaho is apparently a bunch of babies when they leave their pole barn and are afraid to play in a little rain and Florida is somehow concerned about the safety of their fans I will pick another game. Did we ever get an acceptable explanation as to why this game could not be played this morning? Does Idaho still get their check?

Anyway…some people I trust on here seem to like a game tonight…and don’t take the quarter point for the push and pick a damn game.

Also, I’m using this week to skip my essay. Thanks.

Final 2 picks – sorry for the disjointed effort, joined late and made some last minute picks before I could get them all in.
    Tenn -6 over Utah St.
Essay Pick: Okla St.+17.5 over FSU – To be honest, college football isn’t my bag of tea. I don’t know much about oklahoma st., but anytime the public is pounding the defending national champion and giving up 17.5 against a team that at least used to be pretty good, give me the underdog. Fade the Public. Not to be confused with fade the Publix.

    • Just want to clarify that there’s nothing wrong with getting your picks in piecemeal, as long as you generally get them in (especially the essays) in enough advance so that folks can make use of whatever wisdom you share. The rule is the essays have to be in an hour before kickoff, but folks should strive to give more time than that if possible.

      Welcome to the show!

      • Tim Butler

Thanks for the welcome. In the future I’ll have my picks in well before the hour mark. I didn’t decide to join Cheddar Bay until 3:20 on Saturday afternoon after hearing a friend and fellow league member talk about it while watching OSU-Navy. Six picks and 10 minutes later I had laid the foundation for my first (and probably only) Cheddar Bay Lobsterfest, giving everyone a completely false first impression.

I’m new to all this so be gentle to Ole Sheiky baby. A couple of degenerate assholes from around here strong-armed me into following them down their dark path to financial destitution so here goes: Alabama is good and West Virginia isn’t. There’s more to this I’m sure, but that seems to me to be as good a reason as any in a game with a 26 point spread.

In keeping up with the nature of this contest, with some gracious slack from the executive committee, here is my essay (post-game) in which I tried to recall what I wrote pre-game so as to make things as completely genuine as possible.

      Wisconsin +5

      Kent St. -3

      Fresno State +22

      Texas -25.5

      $$$$ IRISH -21

Making my return from the depths of the basement, where I spent most of last year due to lack of effort and lack of knowledge, I always find week one to be the most tumultuous challenge of the season-for two reasons:

      1. Pretending to know much about any team at this point in August is pretty much impossible, even with all those awesome pre-season polls and rankings, and all the “5 star recruits” that your team landed in the offseason. Who really knows how well the team is going to gel, how first-year starters are going to handle prime-time, and how much meaningful game tape they’ve got on their week one opponent?

and 2. Finding mis-priced bets with that in mind is difficult, much less six of them in one pool of college games.

Warren Buffett has good advice in this situation, as usual:
“Don’t do anything in life where, if somebody asks you the reason why you are doing it, the answer is “Everybody else is doing it.” I mean, if you cancel that as a rationale for doing an activity in life, you’ll live a better life whether it’s in the stock market or any place else.

I’ve seen more dumb things, and sometimes even illegal things, justified (rationalized) on the basis of “Everybody else is doing it.” You don’t need to do what everybody else is doing. It’s maddening, during the Internet craze when the bubble was going on.

Here’s your neighbor who’s got an IQ of 50 points below you, and he’s making all this easy money and your wife is telling you “This jerk next door is making money, and you’re smarter than he is. Why aren’t you making money?”

You have to forget about all those things. You have to do what works, what you understand, and if you don’t understand it and somebody else is doing it, don’t get envious or anything of the sort. Just go on and wait until you find something you understand.” (I’m going to plug my favorite knowledge blog: farnamstreetblog.com here so you can get smarter and be entertained.)

So I’ve gone with something I understand, albeit the same thing that I have been very emotionally attached to since I was a toddler-Notre Dame Football. In a situation where your team is favored by 21, at home, on new turf, with five starters suspended from the game, with a quarterback who’s played in a national championship game, but hasn’t taken a live snap in 600 days, against an opponent you don’t really have a clue about, the noise would tell you “RICE, ALL DAY.” (About 2-to-1 in fact) But clearly, you go with what you know: That the players you lost, two of them as Irreplaceable as Beyonce, would surely hurt you against an opponent like Florida State or USC, but against Rice, your backups should be able to go toe to toe with Texas’ 6th or 7th best football school. That your quarterback has taken this offseason more seriously than just about anyone in the country, and he’s a far better playmaker than his less than average replacement/predecessor/fill-in Tommy Rees (who ironically sat across from me at The Irish Oak in Wrigleyville yesterday during the game). And, that he alone should account for 28 points or so regardless of the opponent. And lastly, that your head coach may be conniving, vulgar, and perhaps even semi-guilty of reckless endangerment and even involuntary manslaughter of a film assistant-(RIP)-but the man can coach his ass off. So, ignoring the noise, or lack thereof (only 4 of you picked ND alongside me), I had originally assumed my Irish in a nail biter 38-13.

I promise to not be late to the party with excuses of technical difficulties next week, and indefinitely into the future.

      • this did not get past the exec committee and dan will use his ‘essay-baggage’ week here. thanks dan… these things happen to all of us. way to roll with it.

    Essay: West Virginia + 27

Roll Tide? On the road? By 4 touchdowns? I’m not so sure. Then again I’m probably walking into a trap set by Vegas oddsmakers. Despite ESPN’s threats to hold its breath and turn blue, this year the all-powerful status of the SEC is in doubt. Unless WVU has had a whole lot of turmoil that I haven’t plugged in to, I don’t see Alabama trounces WVU on the road in spectacular fashion.

    LSU over Wisc (All Play)
    FSU -17.5 over OSU
L’ville -3.5 over Miami (FL) ESSAY PICK

Admittedly this game is my essay pick because of when it is being played. My wife leaves town Monday afternoon for work travel and I’ll be able to end the Labor Day weekend watching my first Cheddar Bay ESSAY pick game. It just feels right. I don’t know much of anything about the rosters for either team. I’m taking L’ville based on Bobby P. His lack of loyalty, honesty and integrity throughout his career is off-putting, but everyone deserves a second, or third, or fourth chance….right? Anyways, he’s a survivor and by all accounts a fiery competitor and I see that trumping all of the bad karma he’s due, at least for this game. I imagine his narrative about coming back to L’ville being a relevant part of the 2014 college football season and it begins Monday with a win over Miami. I think……

Going with the U here because revenge (UL crushed Miami in bowl game last year) and Duke Johnson is back and he’s a badass (they sucked after he got hurt last year). Louisville #1 wr is out. people are worried about Miami freshman qb making his first start on the road. I am not. golden says hes an unflappable dude and he won a wide open competition in camp. Miami returns 7 starters on defense and petrino (douche) is installing new offense. plus, it is more fun to root for the U and papa johns pizza sucks. I hope Louisville loses every game

ESSAY: Utah State + 6 over Tennessee

Alright, time for some Sunday Night Chuckie Keeton! His glorious return will only improve a squad that fared pretty well without him last year, going 6-3 and besting Jordan Lynch/NIU in the Poinsettia Bowl. This was largely due a defense that was “quite possibly the toughest defense in the country against the run,” from which five starters return this season. ANOTHER crucial return for Utah State is that of running back and preseason Doak Walker Award candidate Joe Hill, who, like Chuckie, suffered a season-ending knee injury last fall. Meanwhile, it’s tough to argue with the direction of Butch Jones’s program, but Tennessee’s at least two years away from capitalizing on its recent influx of five-star talent. The Vols boast a mere six senior starters, tying Temple for the fewest in the FBS, and unproven (albeit highly-touted) true freshmen litter the two-deep. Did I mention FBS teams named “the Aggies” are 3-0 this weekend, outscoring their opponents 127-51?!? Utah State to cover and win.

    Fla State -17.5 Essay

This is the perfect game to sucker in the public on a program like Oklahama State getting 17.5 points..Oh my gawd! The cowboys are getting 17 points..pound them!! I got news for yall. Brandon Weeden aint walking thru that door and Justin Blackmon is too busy smoking doobies and being harassed by racist cops to come back for his last year of eligibility. So heres the deal.. Any QB with the balls to walk out of a grocery store with a pound of crab legs for free is who MY MONEY is on. Pound the Noles and gimme them – the 17.5.

  • CLEinMPLS

    Hawaii +17
    FSU -17.5 (essay)

Much like TrashyCamaro, this is my least favorite week of the Cheddar season. I have trouble keeping up with the turnover of college ball, and know that the real gamblers make their money on the lower level conferences (sun belt, Mac, etc.). That being said, I am foolishly going to take the favorite in one of today’s marquee games. This game reminds me a bit of the the Bama-Michigan game at JerryWorld a few years ago. At the end of the day, I don’t believe that Ok State will be able to get off the field against the FSU offense. I know FSU has to replace Benjamim and their RB, but when you have one of the best QBs in college football, they will be fine. I look for Jameis to play smart and take what is given. The Noles we’re excellent in prime time last year, and on a neutral field, they will roll. 45-21 FSU.

  • Dave Borcas

    The rest of my picks…….
    LSU-all pick
    Nebraska
    USC
    Ohio State – essay game
Call me a homer, I prefer to say believer. This isn’t your fathers or Jim Tresses Buckeyes. Urban put too much focus on Braxton Miller last year. He has weapons and will be forced to use them this year. With an emphasis on the running game and play action the offense will be just fine, and maybe better than last year.
We probably won’t find out if the porous secondary is fixed for a few weeks. What I do know is that the front seven has the size and speed to deal with the option offense. It may take a series or two to adjust but they will adjust.
And finally we all know Urban does not take losing well. He doesn’t like being in the lost two in a row club with Nick Sabin. Buckeyes roll 41-10.

Essay: FSU -17.5 over Oklahoma State. This is my least favorite week of the cheddar year – not enough NFL. However, the exec committee realized this and went ahead and only made this week worth half the points.

So, really, FSU who brought back everyone important through trials and tribulations (Jameis forgot the turf in his surf and turf) is only a 17.5 point favorite? Meanwhile, Michigan and Florida, my two personal favorite teams had extreme difficulty last year and are somehow both favored by 30+?? Last year UF scored 30 points in a game twice (and only 24 on Toledo) including the days when Driskel was around, while Michigan struggled to stop just about everyone that was not from Central Michigan.

One of my personal rules in Cheddar Bay is to not pick against my teams – here I have done it twice and put myself in position not only to root for one of my most hated teams, but to most likely get hit double when they win but fail to cover.

    I hate this week.

    • good news is you dodged a bullet with the colorado loss that happened last nite.

    Essay: OSU over Navy

I have no doubt this pick will scare me for the first half. Navy will control the clock if OSU’s defense didn’t come prepared for the multiple option looks. I also have no doubt Urban’s system will allow the right QB to succeed at the position, and I believe Barrett will fit in perfect. Sure, his first game won’t be perfect – but I don’t see a scenario where he gets taken out. There’s simply no substitute for actual game experience. That is a huge plus for me. Urban is going to want his new signal caller to get some experience throwing the ball as well, not just handing it off. I expect Barrett to spread it around to multiple options that the Navy defense does not have the skill to cover. If they haven’t already by halftime, I believe OSU will seize control of this game in the second half and not let off. Halftime adjustments, some time to catch their breath, and a good yelling by Urban will have OSU focused enough to cover this spread no problem.

  • HitTheHorns

    Hit The Horns:

    Boise State +10.5 (loss)

    LSU -5 – All Play

Arkansas +20. 11 covers in a row for Auburn. I’ll be against them until I get that damn cheddar point.

Virginia +21 – I could go the West Coast team playing a noon game on the East Coast, but I think it’s more than that here. UCLA has national title expectations; expectations that UCLA rarely has. Just four years ago they were 4-8 and three years ago 6-8. Now national title, three TD road favorites? Virginia returns a lot of players and has hosted the likes of Penn State, BYU, and Oregon in the non-conference that last few years. Hosting a big name, out of conference opponent is nothing new to them, and I’ll look for them to stay within the three TDs at home.

Georgia -7.5 – I like the revenge spot at home for Georgia. Clemson lost a ton on offense, though Texas A&M proved that may not be as significant as some would have you believe. Regardless, last year Georgia had this game at a neutral site, and then had to host South Carolina the following week. This year, they are at home and have a bye next week. Their new quarterback got to start 2.5 games last year, and they return most of their D that HAS to improve. If this line seems so obviously high, why won’t the books push it down to 7 or below? I’ll take the experienced D vs. the inexperienced O in this one.

**ESSAY**Miami Florida +3.5 – Where to begin with this one. A rematch of last season’s bowl game, a game in which Louisville outgained them by nearly 400 yards and winning by 27. They did this as five point favorites at a neutral site. Now the game is at Louisville and Miami is starting a true freshman and the line is only 3.5? I get it that Bridgewater and Coach Strong are gone, but they were so dominant that at home they “should” take care of business; however, this line is suspiciously low, which is why I’m going the other way. Petrino will have this team flying at some point, but it’s going to be a few weeks, while Al Golden has probably showed the tape of the bowl game all off season. Miami is going to want to make a statement. Last season, the Week 1 Monday Night game featured a freshman QB (unknown to most of the country) on the road making his first start. A Heisman Trophy, National Championship, and pound of crab legs later…Time for Miami’s freshman QB to make a name for himself.

it’s really really really non-pforever to not only pick osu, but to make them my essay pick. but if one thing has crystallized over the off-season, it’s that johnny manziel is only as good as the system that he’s in. *sigh. but we should try to make lemonade with our lemons, right? so I’m doubling down on urban meyer’s buckeyes this week. sure they’d be better off with their star qb. but the buckeyes’ continuing success doesn’t depend on the talent of braxton miller. despite what a large majority of the betting public seems to think, they will be totally fine against the midshipmen.

I clearly have no idea what I’m doing, and the requisite Friday night beer and wine are not helping, but here we go:

    LSU -5 (All Play)
    Penn State +1.5
    Appalachian State +34.5
    Fresno State +22

Tennessee -6 (Essay to come when I am more sober, or maybe less sober.)

Apologies for any egregious displays of my own point-spread ignorance.

    • shoseph

      Tennessee -6 (Essay)

I’m going to simply state that the main reason I picked Tennessee over Utah State is my own SEC bias. Also, the Aggies’ gray-on-white uniforms appeared to be stitched from dirty Nike-branded underwear, and I can’t support that fashion choice. Lastly, when Tennessee visited Oregon last year, I found their fans to be congenial, smartly dressed, and carrying a “please not in the face” attitude that couldn’t help but elicit sympathy from me. So, I’d like to see the Volunteers start off the season on the right foot, before seeing their modest hopes crushed in the hands of the rest of the SEC.

***I think we have heard enough about the loss of Braxton Miller crushing the chances of a successful season for the buckeyes. The fact of the matter is that it isn’t as rough as the media portrays. JT Barrett can play. He now has an opportunity to show off his skills away from the horseshoe against an inferior opponent. His teammates will rally around him and the defense will show up to help control the game. Also, nobody has forgotten how Buffalo gave OSU a scare the first game of the year last season. This team is amped up to get this season started. Buckeye cruise in this one…

      Essay pick: U of Central Flor-i-duh -1.5

My wife went to Penn State; a few years back, we trekked out to State College (my 2nd time only), and they were a competitive team that year. We saw JoePa’s 409th win, which was a record-breaker I believe; we still have two souvenir hot chocolate mugs and everything. I actually only saw the first half, because my back, which I would find out 1 month later had 2 herniated discs in it, gave out from sitting on a cold, hard bleacher bench in sub-freezing weather. I took a shuttle bus from the stadium back to the parking lot by myself, and sat in a reclined car seat listening to the 2nd half on the radio. So I was 1-0. Sort of. And 2 weeks later would find out just how historic (or, if you look at the record books, non-existent) that game was.

We were going to head out to Ireland for this game, as my wife has always wanted to go there, and her beloved Nittany Lions were playing. But then she had to go get pregnant, and our 5-week old is upstairs crying as I type this. I believe our presence and support is what drives that team to win, and our absence will be a huge detriment to their efforts overseas. That, and the way you hear people talk about Coach Franklin you’d think he was suiting up, pads and all, himself. But let me tell you: he’s no Coach O’Leary, leader of men who play for the UCF Knights; a man you can trust and believe in. Yes sir, his word, be it verbal or written down on paper, maybe paper used to display a resume, for instance, is good enough for me.

And the FootballOutsiders metrics like UCF to cover, which in a 1.5 pt game is good enough for me. With any luck, that 5-week old will wake me up for kickoff.

    Cheddar Bay.

About damn time. Welcome back to all the familiar faces and welcome to all the new people. There are damn borderline geniuses here and the weekly threads are far more entertaining that any stupid pregame show.

As I look to make it 3 straight years of grabbing the final playoff spot I am haunted by what could have been when Peyton Manning decided to no show not realizing that his legacy and Cheddar Bay glory for me were both on the line. So I stewed about it all summer and decided the proper course of action was to buy a ton of biscuits from Red Lobster and randomly chuck them at every Papa John’s delivery driver that I see and anyone driving a Buick. Then I quickly came to the realization that biscuits are delicious and you must learn from your past. If you want bee pollen you get your ass out there and use a straw like a man. No pills for me. Anyway on to the picks…

Colorado (-3) over CSU – Week 1 you can pick your favorite team…or as I like to say in my 2014 Colorado preview: This is the year that everyone learns how to spell and pronounce: Sefo Liufau. Colorado has the QB and has the coach. (Please do not alert me when Dan Hawkins is calling games on ESPN…you know blood pressure and all)

Marshall (-24) over Miami (OH) – Enjoy stomping everyone in the regular season to earn a bid in the Duck Commander Bowl where a middling Power 5 school pounds you. I don’t even know if Marshall could go to that bowl game but who gives a shit now that we have a playoff.

Kent State (-3) over Ohio – Because as an Akron man I feel tremendous sadness for Kent and hope they rally around a tragedy Saturday. That and Ohio has to start a new QB for the first time since the 90s. Carlos Huerta and Tyler Tettleton combined for like 15 college seasons. I think I just dated myself with a Huerta reference.

Florida (-36.5) over Idaho – Hello Idaho. Good to see you again.

AP – Wisconsin (+5) over LSU – When in doubt always take the better coach. If Wisconsin wins this game they will not lose until the national semifinal.

    Essay Pick

One of my favorite things to do in Cheddar Bay is find the team that I think is the biggest dumpster fire and just ride them all year long. I take great pride in calling myself an Idaho football expert. One of my strengths is the MAC. Imagine my joy when I think I found my whipping boy in my favorite conference this year. When you think #MACtion you think UMass football. Why in the world has this team not just gone back to FCS? Maybe because New Hampshire and Delaware and Maine would all kick the shit out of them but hey money talks.

Which is all far more interesting that typing Mark Whipple 50 times and calling it an essay.

I have done zero research on BC and know pretty much nothing about them but I am assuming they still have uniforms, the bus will show up, and the team will kick the shit out of UMass for that stupid ass prank in which someone thought it would be funny to put the Flutie statue in a UMass jersey.

    BC (-17) over UMass

    • the umass and idaho opportunites were at risk of being overlooked. thanks for fixing that.

  • Petefranklin

For those betting real cheddar, I just bet the UNDER 45.5 on Penn St/UCF pretty hard(2nd biggest bet of week so far)

    • Petefranklin

Small under plays on Virginia, Navy, and UAB. Uab is probably the strongest of the bunch of these three.

  • thatsfine

Excited to be back! Within the past month I have a newborn baby, moved across the country, closed on a house, started a new job, and am making time for Cheddar Bay as well. Must make time for Cheddar Bay!

    ESSAY
MiamiOH+24 – Leaping into MACtion with the year’s first essay… I expected this line to be much higher. And it’s not moving, even though the entire free world is probably taking the Thundering Herd. It’s insane to pin 1.5 cheddar points on a team that went 0-12 last year and looked like even worse than that. But, I’m gonna zig instead of zag even if my alma mater is trotting out Western College Program students masquerading as a football team. I read an interview with Chuck Martin, and at least the MU coach is talking a pretty good game. He was a 2X national champion at Grand Valley State, who would also be favored over MU by at least 14 if they were scheduled this year.
LSU -5 – Until the B1G proves otherwise
Colorado -3 – the line went from -13.5 to -3, just a bargain play
    Penn St +1.5
    UVA +21
    WVU +26

    • Petefranklin

I think the Miami line is holding because of Marshall’s road woes covering last year.
i think the game goes over as well.

    • “Leaping into MACtion” is quite an understatement here. Kudos, win or lose.

    • AlvaroEspinoza10

      Kent State
      Alabama
      Tennessee
      Texas
LSU– essay pick: Liking LSU here for many reasons. First, LSU has won 11 openers in a row. Baton Rouge is as tough a place to play as anywhere in the Big 10, especially today when the humidity is 100% and the Wisconsin team has been practicing up north all summer. I am intrigued by what Fournette will do today and as a LSU’s most talked about recruit in a long time, I think he shines at home in primetime and makes ol’ man les miles look good. A bit worried about the LSU QB situation– we’ll see what Cam Cameron can do. Wisconsin will probably run all over LSU’s middle defense, but the athletes on the O side of the ball will spell trouble for Wisconsin in what I expect to be a very high scoring game. More than anything, think home field advantage will be huge in Baton Rouge, and a bit of a nostalgic pick as its my first year away from Louisiana for the start of college football season.

Time for a round of Underdog Bingo.

All-Play Wisconsin +5 over LSU – regretting this pick already
Appalachian State +34.5 over Michigan – history is on my side!
    Clemson +7.5 over Georgia
    Colorado State +3 over Colorado
Oklahoma State +19 over Florida State

Penn State +1.5 over Central Florida – It’s Nobody Knows Anything Especially Me week, so I’m going with the game with the most unpredictable external factors I can think of for my essay, one in which the previews use the term “Icelandic volcano” not as a nickname for a defensive lineman but as an actual geological phenomenon. (I was also seriously considering Portland State +34 with an essay consisting of “screw the Beavers” repeated Shining-style for several pages). UCF is going to have to adjust to life post-Bortles (he was apparently 20-27 for 288 yards and 3 TDs in UCF’s victory last year, which should be hard to replace) and they’re starting a freshman not only on the road, but on a different continent. I guess the hope is that the line movement is down to people betting based on last year’s form, and that Central Florida is going to regress this year. Meanwhile, Penn State and their new coach… might be good? Maybe? Hell if I know, but that’s part of the fun when everyone’s 0-0.

Week 1 is finally here and I’m checking in from beautiful Destin, FL and family vacation so not a ton of thought or prep went into these picks, trying to knock this out while kids are taking a nap so take it for what it is. Good to be back for 2nd season after just missing playoffs in rookie outing. Here goes…

    Uconn +14.5 vs. BYU
    UTSA +10 vs. Houston
    UCF -1.5 vs. Penn St
    Utah St. +6 vs. Tennessee
LSU -5 vs. Wisconsin (All Play)
    FAU +22 vs. Nebraska (Essay)

With not a lot of time to prep I’m making FAU +22 my essay for week one. I literally know nothing about this team but I’m in Florida (albeit gulf side and not Atlantic), 78% of public is on Nebraska which is the highest consensus I see on the board, the line has dropped from 24 to 22 and I see a lot of 21’s on other sites. Anyone who knows me knows I tend to go against the public, especially when it’s this big and the line is moving other way. Taking the extra point and thinking they can keep within 3 touchdowns. Nebraska 34 FAU 14.

  • Posted on behalf of Art Brosef:

This seems so square but I dont care. I’m also writing this from my phone so its not as polished as I’d like. But its 100 words so fuck off!!

Gimme WSU for my essay. Mike Leach held camp 30 miles from from campus, presumably to keep his players away from their fat girl girlfriends (most underrated presser ever). He spent his off season writing a leadership book based on Geronimo, and he got himself a half a million dollar raise. All of this bodes well for a strong WSU start to the season.

Oh, and record setting QB Connor Halliday is also back – as are his TOP EIGHT receivers! Their defense can be suspect but they did force 30 turnovers last year.

Meanwhile, Rutgers is in for a long season. They somehow play 4x the amount of ranked opponents that OSU does, and have to travel the entire way across the country during the school week to open the year.

Rutgers will probably score some points, but I look for WSU to score tons of points.

    • Art_Brosef

Forgot to mention Rutgers is starting mostly untested underclassmen in their secondary, so Connor should have even more of a field day than usual. Also, Rutgers.

    • Art_Brosef

Will add PSU as nothing more than a homer play, although Im excited as hell to watch Hackenberg this year, nobody in America throws a better ball and hes only a sophomore. He also gets throw it to Jesse James, who might be the best athlete in college football. Dude is a 6’7” tight end who weighs 270 and also runs a 4.6 40. Absolute stud.

Will take LSU for the all play.

      • Art_Brosef

Will add OU and Western Michigan.

      **Troy +2.5 over UAB
My pet Sun Belt pick has been good to me, so I feel I owe them at least an opening essay this year. They finished with a decent record last year thanks to a pretty potent offense that managed to compensate for a weak defense. Their starting QB was TBD as of a few days ago; no more luxury of a 4-yr record setting starter. Whatever his name, he’ll have a solid and deep O line and a nice pack of receivers, including a super fast junior named Holmes who had 7 TDs last year and should have a great year. UAB was horrid last year, and are starting fresh with a new head coach. This is an Alabama rivalry and projected to be a close game, with UAB enjoying the home field. I usually can’t find Troy’s games on TV, which is probably a good thing.

      • Going against the Badgers?

        • CleveLandThatILove

          I know. Just a feeling.

  • zarathustra

Last year was a complete disaster for me around these parts. Week after week of bad picks, zigging when a spot screamed zag and of course zagging when a zig would have been prudent.  I brought a great dishonor not only upon myself,  but upon the whole of the zarathustra household including the ancestors who preceded me as well as the many seeds I shall leave in my wake before I leave this earth. Indeed, so great was the dishonor that I lost my family entirely.  My wife, my children, my wonderful dog, my home….all gone. The shame was so overwhelming that I sunk into a several months long depression and just plain quit showing up to work. I found myself penniless and all alone. All because of a quite irrational belief in the saints and ravens down the stretch–the two teams I was sure were superbowl-bound and responsible for four of the six essay picks I missed on to end the season.
This was rock bottom.  I vowed never to wager on sports again. I would retire from cheddar bay. Barely surviving at subsistence level already I decided it would be the ascetic life for me. I threw on an old red and back flannel and packed a few of my scant possessions in a bindle around a hobo stick and wandered down interstate 77 heading southbound determined to uncover the meaning of it all. I lived as a drifter for a few months, travelling from one Appalachian town to another, living amongst the pillbillies and teen moms, learning their rituals and customs so that they may accept me as one of their own. Alas, it wasn’t long before I found myself shuffling from church basement to church basement jonesing for bingo action. I was a bingo addict now and I did not believe it best to seek the counsel of the holy men who were the proprietors of the local bingo racket. Instead I sought seclusion in the wisdom of the mountains.
I climbed and climbed and eventually discovered a patch of rock I would call home. I sat down and remained sitting for what felt like an eternity, pondering the impermanence of existence and all that surrounded me. Basically I attained what some would call enlightenment. This was nice and all but then I felt a cold chill down my spine. It was a feeling I’ve felt before and I knew what it meant and what I must do.
“Miss Tescmacher!” I needed my stenographer. I bellowed again. “Miss Tescmacher!!!”
“Yes Lex I mean Zara.” I may have adopted an ascetic lifestyle, but one should always employ a skilled stenographer when traveling–especially if she looks like Valerie Perrine circa 1980 or so.
“August 28th 2014. Fuck enlightenment.  Gary Nova is somehow still the quarterback at Rutgers. If this world is merely an illusion and I am indeed trapped in some godforsaken matrix I’ll be danned if I am going forego an opportunity to wager against gary nova again.”
“But Zara….I thought you had retired from all of that.”
“So did I Miss Tescmacher. So did I. But I can’t lie to myself any longer. I’m cheddar bay for life. Now type these words up and send them off to Mr. Kanicki post haste.”

      ESSAY PICK: LSU -5***

After getting roughed up on Thursday, I’m in for three favorites and a don’t-get-blown-out special. I’ll put LSU out there as the essay because from what I’ve read, this is going to be a run-heavy ballgame, so I’ll take the home-ish team. This looks like it might be Wisconsin’s toughest game, so I’m leery of them getting into it so early in the schedule. As many veteran Cheddarers may remember, I am always NFL-heavy, so these are just desperate heaves that I hope will float ashore with some points. & Louisiana generally owes me one after that Tulane loss.

    Random stabs:

Essay: Northwestern: Return a lot on the lines and think they are poised for good year, as evidenced by double digit number against Pac 12 foe, although its pathetic Cal. The fighting ex-tedfords could have anything, but they were sure a mess last year and a trip across the country to start the season probably isn’t the easiest of orders. Also like that Marc was widely regarded as their best player and he’s out the door, which certainly will have your basic square ESPN reader thinking that Cal plus the points is the way to go. I guess I don’t love it, and this isn’t the most convincing essay, but this early in the year public opinions are poorly formed and I don’t have a whole lot to go off.

    Others:
    Utah St.
    Navy
    South Carolina
    UT-San Antonio

    All play:

  • Hey hey Cheddar Bay!

The Prohibited Favorite, Defending Champ (57% ATS, 70% pick of week), and only two-time Champ in Cheddar Bay history will kick off 2014 with a play on Texas A&M Aggies +10.5 over South Carolina Gamecocks because if I’m going to (inevitably) also become the only repeat Champ in Cheddar Bay history it’s going to be critical that I not get too cocky about things.

    http://coub.com/view/3w2426u7

    !!!

Other reasons for this pick: 1) Acto is clueless; 2) I want to watch this game on TV; 3) A&M’s loss of Johnny Football more likely to be accounted for in this spread than SCar’s loss of Conor Shaw; 4) Acto is clueless; 5) A&M’s defense was totally decimated by injuries last season, should be a lot better this year; 6) Acto is clueless; 7) Johnny Football Ewing Theory???? 8) Acto.

I’ll get in on Mississippi -10.5 over Boise State as well because Technivore’s been patiently biding his time for years now re: entering this contest and I really like his essay.

These two are regular picks. I’ll be back with an essay and three more at some point or points between now and Monday. Happy kickoff, all!

” it’s going to be critical that I not get too cocky about things.”
      Too late Frownie.

      • Get a clue, Acto.

Shows what you know Frownie, everyone else knows that will never happen.

    • It’s strange to see the public so high on Penn State tomorrow morning. UCF’s D is basically the same really strong unit from last season (that banged with South Carolina, slowed down Baylor, etc.) and they still have tons of talent in their receiving corps. Could Blake Bortles really be all that irreplaceable? I like James Franklin as much as the next guy but it’s his first year with the program and I think there’s a heavy bandwagon thing going on here. Also, reverse line movement. Tempted to make this my essay but for now keep it as a regular pick. Central Florida -1.5 over Penn State.

Oh, and in an opening week tradition for me, I’ll ride old FlyHighFrye’s essay, OUBobcats +3 over Kent State.

Back tomorrow with two for the night games, and maybe to make UCF my essay.

      • If Holeman starts that game at QB for UCF I’m still alive for the Week 1 Lobsterfest. Also 79-yard TD for PSU when 2 UCF DBs bite on fake on 3rd and 19 … Ranell Hall (UCF’s best receiver) sat for the whole game …. grumble grumble grumble …

        ANYWAY.

Essay and All Play — Wisconsin +5 over LSU: I appreciate as much as anyone the Executive Committee’s infinite wisdom in making this week worth half the points for acclimatization purposes. These are all tough ones and I probably won’t pick more than 3 college games in any other week this year. This week I’ll have to be comfortable enough fading the public by going with the Badgers here. As Gavin points out, 5 point lines are fugazi (why isn’t it 6?). LSU had a hard time stopping the run last year, and lost two DTs who left early for the NFL. Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s o-line and backfield returns pretty much everyone. Questions about whether the Badgers will be able to pass at all tonight (though LSU starting cornerback Rashard Robinson is suspended for tonight) and questions about whether their completely retooled front 7 will be able to stop the Tigers but they shouldn’t be completely soft, the secondary is proven, and LSU’s passing attack has a lot of question marks itself. I don’t know, 5 points just seems like a lot here.

Clemson +7.5 over Georgia: Not crazy about this one but struggled to find anything else (FSU over Ok St. just too square). The Clemson front 7 is the most proven unit in this game. That and the points and Dabo >>> Richt will have to be enough here.

Finally and most importantly, thanks to Kanick for making this glorious contest possible.

  • Its Only Money

I guess I’ll pick a few games tonight hopefully starting off on the right foot.

    ULM -1.5 v. Wake
    Vanderbilt -13.5 v. Temple
    Washington State -8 v. Rutgers

I’ll be back tomorrow to pick my other 3. I don’t have time for the essay right now.

    • Its Only Money

Well that was a hell of a start, two faves losing games out right and one getting taken out behind the woodshed at home. Hopefully my next 3 picks are a little better, I’ll start with the all play:

      LSU -5 v. Wisconsin
      BGSU -7.5 v Western Kentucky

      Essay Pick:
FSU -17.5 v Oklahoma State in Jerry’s World

I’m going to ride the Seminoles until they do me wrong this year. This is a game that the total probably can’t get high enough either. The cowpokes have never been a defensive stalwart and this year’s team is inexperienced to boot. They have the least experience of any power 5 team in the nation. This early season match-up will be too much for them to start off. The ‘Noles only lost a little last year, but seem to have just reloaded. They will just be too much for OSU. It might take FSU a quarter to shake off a little rust but in the end they will roll. The neutral site doesn’t really seem to be an issue for FSU and it’s hard to guess how well OSU will travel. If this game were played later in the year it might be closer but to open up it is going to be one to turn off early.

  • twitter request on behalf of CapitalGG –> one cheddar point on OleMiss.

    • Capitalgg

Cheddar Bay has returned. I’ve told my 25 month old daughter that Daddy loves her but he has more important things to do for the next 5 months, but when I return I will have enough money to finally start her college fund. She was upset, but I think she’ll eventually understand.

I’ve been in the top 25% each of the past 2 seasons. That’s been good enough to narrowly miss the playoffs both seasons. What can I say, at least I’m consistent?

This season brings new challenges, mostly that I somehow am completely lost on college football. I don’t know why. This is my supposed bread and butter. But a lot of my old reliables are now gone. Jordan Lynch is in the NFL. Keith Wenning is in Baltimore (f—ing Baltimore!?!) Coaches I’ve gotten comfortable with are moving all over the place. And who the is coaching Arkansas St. this year? Another new coach? Didn’t they get one last year? And the year before that?

Hell, whole conferences are being shuffled (who’s in ConfUSA and the FunBelt again? There are how many teams in the ACC? The Big Ten? Whatever the Big East is called now?) It’s like everyone was 8th year seniors last year and now they’ve all graduated.

So how do I do this when I’m starting from a blank slate? I’m going with the 1 thing I know for certain. Chuckie Keeton is the best player in college football. I know Ol’ Crab Legs in Florida is the defending National Champ and Heisman winner, but nobody dominates like Chuckie. He was hurt last season in early October and the entire USA was deprived of witnessing his brilliance rolling through the Mountain West.

So all I Know is that Chuckie Keeton will do Chuckie Keeton things and a bad Tennessee team from a very good but slightly over-inflated SEC will be unprepared. If the world were fair (it’s not), Chuckie Keeton would win the Heisman this season. So for my 1/2 value essay for week 1, I’m going to ride Chuckie Keeton and the Utah State Aggies +6 at Rocky Top.

All-Play: LSU -5 v. Wisconsin. This is a far more interesting game for Wisconsin than the Bayou Bengals. Wisconsin is representing the B1G obviously in it’s attempt to be relevant nationally again. But they are obviously representing themselves too. They typically have been good enough to be near the top of the B1G but not win games on a national level. So the question becomes whether Gary Andersen can get Sconny over the hump and win a big game.

A 5 point line is a lie. A tease, if you will. It’s really 6, but but slips smaller to fool you. That being said, if you’d play 6, you’ll definitely play 5. And I shall.

      1. Ole Miss -10.5 v. Boise St. Peterson left for a reason. I think the cupboard is getting bare in Boise thanks to the reshaping of the college football landscape. Ole Miss on the other hand has had 2 historically good recruiting classes. I think it finally starts to pay off, if Dr. Bo doesn’t screw things up.

      2. Arizona -24 v. UNLV. Rich Rod is a terrible big game coach. He was a failure at Michigan because he didn’t recruit defense. But in Arizona he’s a good fit. I feel Arizona might be a value pick in the Pac-12 South. Everyone is in love with UCLA. USC is lurking. Sparky is dangerous (full disclosure: I really like them this year also). But really the South is pretty wide open, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see Zona rise up. And we know that offense can score points in bunches and UNLV can’t score or play defense.

      3. Bowling Green -7.5 @ Western Kentucky. Trusting Kanick on BGSU this year (though they did finish crazy strong last season). I’m not sold on the ‘Toppers especially going back to Bobby Petrino.

      4. TBD: Debating between the Dublin tilt or a game in scenic West Lafayette. Might have to take the Dublin game just so I’m not compelled to watch Purdue.

      • Capitalgg

Last pick Penn St +1.5 v. UCF. Normally I would ride UCF here, but the George O’Leary’s gonna quit after the game combined with the James Franklin enthusiasm. Seems PSU needs this game more. Want to is so important when the teams appear close so I’ll take want to and points.

  • 1. GSU -4 vs Abilene Christian. (loss)

    2. BYU -16.5 at UConn. New coach in transition with program in tatters versus the machine Bronco Mendenhall runs.

    3. Marshall -24 at MiamiO. New coach in transition with program in even more tatters than UConn versus possible BCS at-large team, probable undefeated CUSA champ, featuring returning CUSA player of the year (Rakeem Cato), and coached by true West-By-God-Virginian named Doc Holliday.

    4. Auburn -20 vs Ark. How can I not? The biggest factor in last year’s success, Nick Marshall, is back. His ‘suspension’ will last one drive, two if Auburn scores on the first drive. And it’s at home.

5-Allplay. Wisc/LSU… no idea. Will update with pick later.

    6. *** UNT +25.5 at Texas. 25 points? Whoa. We like Charlie Strong and all but… whoa there.. He’s going to change things from Mack Brown but… three and half touchdowns? Against North Texas and their own authentically no-nonsense, bad-ass head coach?

As if giving three TDs to a 10-3 ATS team wasn’t enough incentive, Strong may have lost his marbles based on this:
Offensive coordinator Joe Wickline and assistant head coach for the offense/quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson will both call plays, but Strong isn’t worried about the dynamic between the two. During the spring, Strong indicated that Watson would have the final say in play calling.

Try to imagine an offensive coaching strategy that could be worse than the old alternating QBs you might settle on alternating OCs alternating play-calling except that you’re not insane enough to even dream up such a farce. What in all the fucks.

I’ll be sniffing around the moneyline on this one.

Also liking Wake, OleMiss, SCAR, BGSU, UTSA, OSU, Mich, UAB, Neb, BC, Bama, Okla, Fla, USU.

Essay: Ohio State -16 vs. Navy
I chose to write my essay on the college football team I know the most about. The line dipped to -16 presumably due to Braxtons shoulder but I don’t see Braxton not playing in this game having much of an impact anyway. He probably would of had his shoulder pads off at halftime if he was able to go. Ohio State is expected to have the best defensive line in the nation this year and it should cause really big problems for an overmatched Navy offensive line. I’m also excited to see the athletes Urban has brought in on Offense showcase their speed and light up the scoreboard. With the improved defense and an underated offense this line should be an easy cover for Urban and the bucks.

Good call on the UW pick. I was wavering between that and the NU/Cal game and now I wish I’d gone with UW.

      • Capitalgg

I agree with liking UW very much, however some of the best gambling advice I ever received is “never bet against Hawaii on the bus island.”

The advice has served me well. The Rainbow Warriors have a magic power for just barely covering large spreads usually in some ridiculous backdoor fashion.

I don’t know why exactly. Could be travel 6 hrs from the mainland. Could be vacation in Paradise mental checkout. Could be that the home team is so bad starters get pulled early allowing comebacks.

But really, let’s just enjoy the Hawaii Bros calling the game for TV.

    *****Colo St +3*****

This game is right in my backyard so I figured I’d look into it and give my take. This game will be played at neutral site Invesco Field at Mile High. I guess I have some rooting interest in the Rams as they right here in town, but people don’t go too crazy about the football teams here in Colorado unless you’re talking about the Broncos, so I haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet. It’s a different world coming from the home of the Buckeyes.

I’m not surprised to see the Buffs as the favorite, as their all time record against the Rams is a strong 62-21-2. I think most CU fans write off CSU as they play in the ‘lesser’ conference. Last year the Buffs won on the strong performance of one Paul Richardson who had 10 catches for 208 yards and 2 TDs. He was pretty much the difference in the game as the final was 41-27. I don’t think CU will have the firepower this year to have that kind of result. The Buffs are starting redshirt sophomore QB Sefo Liufau who started about half the season last year en route to a 4-8 record on the season.

Also factoring in for this game is the return of 5th year-Senior QB for the Rams, Garret Grayson. He set all kinds of passing records last year for CSU with 3,696 passing yards and 25 TDs. And while their star center left for the draft last year, the Rams are returning 2 seniors to anchor the left side of their o-line. They will be facing off against a defensive front of the Buffs who have 4 freshman and 2 sophomores, with 1 combined start between them. I don’t think the d-line will be able to put enough pressure on Grayson and he should find his targets all day.

I think this game comes down to CU losing their best player to the NFL and CSU returning their best player as a 5th-year senior. I am also a little worried that the the coach of the Buffs has admitted that some of his players may be “peeing down their legs” on Friday night. I’ll take the points on the neutral field.

  • chuckycrater

    GAMBOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Nebraska -21 vs. Florida Atlantic: Should have been the Pelini Bowl. Somewhat in on the Huskers, Pelini loosening up some is very good for that team. FAU made a very confusing coaching hire, getting Arkansas’s D-line coach. Weren’t the Hogs a train wreck on defense last year? Partridge is supposedly an ace recruiter but he’s completely untested as a head coach.

Penn State +1.5 vs. UCF: Struggled to find lines I had any feelings on but I’m in on James Franklin, Hackenberg is going to be really good, and UCF lost a lot of their top-line talent. George O’Leary has been talking about retiring after this game, which will motivate his players to hahahahahaha just kidding, they’re gonna be thrilled to be rid of him.

Colorado -3 vs. Colorado State: Only the very worst of Colorado teams tend to lose this game, and I actually think the Buffaloes will (finally) be OK this year.

Louisville -3.5 vs. Miami: I will never, ever be sold on Miami.

ALL PLAY: LSU -5 vs. Wisconsin

Basically an LSU home game in Houston, and this pick is mostly due to my faith in John Chavis to stop the Badgers offense. One of the few teams that can match up physically with Wisconsin. Could conceivably be the Badgers’ only loss.

ESSAY: Florida State -17.5 vs. Oklahoma State

I believe in Mike Gundy as a coach. I think he’ll get all the new faces dotting his lineup pulling in the right direction and have another good season. But it usually takes a few weeks for them to hit their stride. Oklahoma State’s Septembers under Gundy are littered with harder-than-expected wins and even some bad losses. Remember how much trouble they had in the first game last year, against Mississippi State? They labored to win that one 21-3, and that was against Mississippi State, the poster child for SEC superiority groupthink even though they go 6-6 or 7-5 every year. Then they lost to West Virginia. But after that Oklahoma State was really good. Anyway, this is a different story. They lost A TON of contributors and they’re facing a full-on juggernaut here. 17.5 is not enough points to scare me away. I would have gone up to at least 21 if I had to.

  • cwonder23

    ACU +4: win
    Other picks:
    W Michigan +10 @ Purdue – Purdue a favorite?…..hmm.
    Colorado -3 vs Colorado State
    App St +34.5 @ Michigan
All play: Wiscy +5 @ LSU – seems like a FG game to me
Essay: Marshall -24 @ Miami (OH)
This one is hard for me to take because I’m a Miami grad but they are awful. I usually don’t bet for/against MUOHIO but Miami is in the running for worst team in FBS this year. Marshall is faster and more experienced. I see this one as a laugher before the end of the 3rd. Looking for redemption from a bad 2013 in Cheddar Bay! Miami is bad. And…..first week…#MACTION

    • cwonder23

      “MACTION”

  • Essay and All Play – Kicking this off with a twofer.

    LSU -4.5

Growing up, being a Buckeye fan was convenient and exciting at the time but the scarlet and gray never stole my heart. I realized this when I was relieved to be dating an Illinois grad and could take the fighting Illini as my Big 10 team. The first Division I school t-shirt I ever purchased was from LSU. Visiting Baton Rouge, thankfully before heading down to New Orleans for the weekend, not after, was just shy of magical. The campus was inviting and bountiful – the landscaping, the women, the party scene, and the eats. It was too late to reasonably or rationally transfer schools and I still am not sure how I would’ve managed an out-of-state tuition, but I would have because when I stepped on LSU’s campus and it didn’t just feel “right” it felt effing GREAT.

Moving to Nashville, just a few weeks in now, fresh out of the car and into our new condo, it dawned on me that I should be cheering for an SEC team. (Note: That almost read “SEX team” – very different conference.) The answer has always been clear, Geaux Tigers. Though they may not be in the Eastern Division, and I will not see them at Vandy as often as I would like. I’m excited to pick up a Southern team with my new everyday phrases like “ya’ll” and “bless your heart.”

Oh? I should probably mention something about their actual football teams? Huh. Okay.

Well. I’m nervous about LSU against Wisconsin’s running game, but I’m hoping the virtual home team advantage invigorates them. LSU is just a drive down I-10, and a stop (or two) at Whataburger, away. Also – you need running AND passing to win and I’m not placing any bets on McEvoy. Something about a converted Safety and junior college transfer. He confuses me.It was meant to be that Wisconsin’s D will be as inexperienced if not more so than LSU’s running backs and wide receivers but I think LSU will have the edge by being able to mix it up with two QBs and brawl out in the heat that they’re used too.

Oh and have a mentioned that LSU hasn’t lost an opening season day in 11 years? #tradition

    Other Picks:

Texas A&M +10.5: 1. The addition A&M’s Daeshon Hall’s pass rushing. 2. I don’t see the Cock’s run & defend strategy generating a great than 10 point win. 3. Kenny Hill = GREAT QB name + going up against some newb cornerbacks.

Temple +17 vs. Vanderbilt: #BecauseAllWomen. Sad to report that Vandy, despite what has already happened, has already had a sexual assault reported by a female student regarding a male she knew within the FIRST WEEK of classes. Get it together, Commodores! Gah. Not that Temple is perfect either. #notalluniversities. Temple ATS.

Appalacian State +35 vs. Michigan. Because 2007.

    Ole Miss -9

Washington -21.5. Because I like the purple Washington team. Not the red one.

AP & EP: LSU -5 Wiscy

First I heard this game was being played at LSU and assumed the Wiscy big boys are going to pass out and cramp up all game long in the August heat. Then I googled the game to be sure, and learned this game is in Houston at NRG aka Reliant Stadium. This is where the Texans play which appears to be air controlled and very comfortable with its retractable roof. I like that Baton Rouge is only a short drive away compared to Madison. But Wiscy usually brings it in these off conference games. I played golf with an SEC guy this week, and he made me laugh with stories about the schools, he says LSU will be good. I haven’t heard anything about Wiscy yet but Gary Anderson seems like a strong coach. This should be a good game, but ultimately I think the field plays fast and LSU’s quickness prevails. Tiger beats Badger.

Cant help myself and have to make my alma mater my first essay! I believe in Urban and his recruiting abilities. I don’t feel like OSU is a rebuild kind of program, its more like who is up next. That being said, JT is up next and will show the country just that. I do think the Buckeyes will miss Braxton, I just don’tt think they will for this game. I think Urban finally has all of his guys in place and that will show on both sides of the ball. Their defense will be much improved and they will look to put points on the board as always. Looking forward to these guys stepping up, impressing the national media and as always shutting Mark May up!

  • CLEVTA

I have a tear in my eye opening up this page. It’s been too long. Before I delve into picks I wanted to send out the teams and players I like and dislike going into the season for fyi purposes. I’ve already discussed how much I like UTSA here (http://603brown.com/2014/07/27/2014-cheddar-bay-headcount/#comment-1515910976). Other teams I like include USC (took 30-1 to win title as a nice sleeper), LSU (Leonard Fournette!!! Legit Frosh RB Heisman candidate. AP-esque), Florida (bounceback from insance # of injuries), Maryland (ditto on injury regression to normalcy), Washington (Love new HC Peterson and Cyler Miles is intriguing QB prospect if he gets head straight). Miles could be this year’s Nick Marshall which I identified as a sleeper Heisman and Auburn as a sleeping Giant last year. I also think Indiana will make a bowl and keep an eye on RB Tevin Coleman. He’s a monster with tremendous speed and if Indiana was just a little better could be a Heisman sleeper as well. Guy averaged 7.3 ypc and had 12 tds on only 111 carries in 9 games. He was splitting time with Stephen Houston who left for the NFL so the gig is all his to dominate.
Teams I dislike (ATS only) include FSU (defending champs typically are overvalued following year+ let down factor for Jameis), Oklahoma (Knight not consistent enough to dominate as of yet), Michigan St (I like Cook but the nation is totally underestimating the big losses on D + ppl forget just how poor that offense performed against bad competition. They will not win the Big10),

Pick #1 Tulane +6.5 Tulsa- Tulsa is terrible. Their offense was one of the worst last season and they lost their best player, Trey Watts, to the STL Rams. Cody Green is their returning QB and he stinks. Tulane off is not good either but actually had a solid defense last year, ranking 13th in def yds/play and made a bowl. They went 7-6 and lost 4 games by 4 pts or less.

          5. Rice +21- way too many big losses between Daniels, Russell and Ishaq for ND not to take the points.
          6. LSU -5 (All play)- LSU is something like 45-0 in their last non conf regular season games. Jennings was a terrible QB in a short stint last year so they will no doubt rely on Fournette and the run game. I have no clue how good/bad McEvoy will be for Wisconsin but LSU is tough d to figure out against.

    Essay:
Ole Miss -10.5 over Boise State

I’ll be honest, my first instinct was to go the other way. Second-rate SEC also ran riding its unearned conference credentials and a late-season lucky streak to favorite status over a tough Mountain West team that wears its underdog status with pride. On a neutral field no less. But then I dug in a little bit and frankly 10.5 points just doesn’t feel like enough. The biggest red flag for me with Boise State is the inexperience of their O-line: 2 juniors and 3 sophomores, the latter having a total of 5 starts among them. Add to that Boise State’s defensive line lost their only pass rush threat in Demarcus Lawrence and its tough to see how the Broncos can win up front on either side of the ball. Well let’s take it a step further actually: not only do I see them not winning up front, I see them getting pushed around by mid-grade SEC beef. And that doesn’t bode well for a Boise State offense centered on the running game, and which didn’t have much success outside of MWC play anyway.

A quick look at opponent first downs per game as a rough proxy for team defense (from http://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/stat/opponent-first-downs-per-game) confirms that Ole Miss’s defense should dominate this game: in 2013 they ranked a middle of the pack 50th with 20.8, with Boise State near the bottom at 24.2. Factor in strength of opponent though and the gap is even wider. Now remember that this is Week 1 for a new coach at Boise State, with the possible inexperience and confusion that implies, and I like the track record of Ole Miss’s D more than I like whatever new wrinkle the Broncos might show on offense.

Boise State returns an experienced but smallish secondary and I see Ole Miss’s 6’2″ Laquon Treadwell, 6’1″ senior Vince Sanders (10.8 yards/target in 2013), and 6’3″ Evan Engram getting plenty of vertical attempts from QB Bo Wallace and an easy cover by Ole Miss.

    Picks:
    South Carolina -10.5 over TAMU
    LSU -5 over Wisconsin
    Northwestern -11 over Cal
    Marshall -24 over Miami (OH)
    Ohio +3 over Kent State

i am with boise, but this is very compelling. if you hit this, i am probably taking all of your essay picks for a few weeks

      • technivore

You have no idea how terrifying this is for me.

    • actovegin1armstrong

Terrific job techni, but what the hell were you thinking with that S Caroline pick? One of the most successful strategies in Cheddar is “fade acto”. Worked well for many punters here last year.

Temple +13.5 Play #1(I got the last 14.5 in Vegas on monday and hit it hard)
WAZZU/Rutgers OVER 62.5 Play #2 and probably my essay I got 61 but should have had 60.5

    • Petefranklin

Play #3 UTAH ST +6 over Tennesee. Chuckie Keaton will shove it right up the big bad SEC’s ass in this one and all CFB fans will be winners for it. The Aggies do have a whole new offensive line I believe but that should play right into the mobile Keaton’s hands here. The Vols D leaves quite a bit to be desired. No sellout in the Smokies either, on opening day! This is also a spot for Utah St where they have had great success, opening day vs. SEC teams. They are 0-4 but have lost all 4 by a combined 7 points or so if memory serves. The only way that I see the Vols coming out of this with a home win is if USU gets a screw job from the refs, especially if they are SEC refs. I’ll call for the outright win by USU here as it’s strictly conference reputation keeping the Aggies this large of a dog. And Tennesee also fits into TA’s stinky fish subset where the large majority of bets are on Tennesee but yet the line has dropped from an opener of 7 down to 6 and below. Don’t mess with the Mountain West!

      • Petefranklin

I guess make USU my essay, that might change though.

        So far:
        1) temple W
        2) USU +6 probable essay but don’t hold me to it
        3) W Mich +10…Who the hell is Purdue to be laying DD points? I bet it at 11.5 for a small size bet, I don’t recommend laying $$$ at +10 though.
        4) ALL PLAY Wiscy +5 I just have a feeling that Les will do something stupid to blow the cover.
I’ll have 2 more tomorrow or this evening …leaning OU, Louisville and Baylor

Jim I think you haven’t loaded my W Mich, and Utah St essay in the spread sheet. Sorry for the confusion, I was pretty hung over this AM. Thanks

          • knew i was missing something, thanks.

    • No over-unders Peter. However I will act on this tip.
(I know I said “If there is a line, you can play it.” but i meant game line. Sorry.)

      • Petefranklin

        Why?

It’s the only regular season football # that has a low limit because it’s beatable which is how this whole contest got started right? Sharing information that will put money in the pockets of your readers, right?

Why should I, and others, not be able to play the best picks in the contest, like Kent St and OU definitely staying under the total of 48?

Were are not talking obscurity here with totals. When Frank Gifford says that “This game is not quite over yet” after a kicker misses a field goal with his team up 14 with under 3 minutes left, it is a total acknowledgement of the over/under bet being part of mainstream america.

So in theory if you are restricting totals, you are restricting gambling much like a republican would. If you restrict gambling you are restraining freedom of choice for those of us in mainstream America like Frank Gifford and Brent Musberger(another gambler) who observe and follow totals. If you help restrain freedom of choice the next thing you know the whole internet will be restrained and your site may get censored. Don’t let the internet get censored, allow totals!https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ROxvT8KKdFw

        • Allowing totals would diminish the contest, which is about picking the
winners of football games. Who wins football games is what’s important
and interesting about football. Whether scores are high and low is not, at least not remotely to the same degree. In this way, betting totals is more about greed and less about the game.

          • Petefranklin

Then why is there a point spread attached to our picks in the contest If it’s about who wins football games? I really could care less about who wins a football game unless it involves the Browns in some way. I do care about how teams perform vs. their perceived value, the point spread.
Totals did evolve from a degenerate side of gambling, I’ll give you that. Totals also give gamblers one added edge that is very hard to acquire when laying -110, that being the ability to pass or play on more choices. The only real advantage that gamblers have over the house book is that the house has to put up #’s on all games, some will inevitably be incorrect. Finding those incorrect #’s is the job of the sports bettor, whether those #’s come in on game totals or not

      • actovegin1armstrong

What is an “over-unders”? I am sporting a fancy pair of Under-roos, the ones with the little ducks on them. Are “over-unders” comparable?

        • Petefranklin

It’s just a silly game that grown ups play. Nothing to see here(except a 5-1 record on over unders that I mentioned here), move along please.

Kanick, the “Current line” for LSU -5, but your write-up has -4.5. You may want to clarify what line we should be using.

    • use the static line in the embed. will check/fix when back online. (crap already a mistake?)

    • use the static line in the embed. will check/fix when back online. (crap already a mistake?)

    • you were right, line is LSU -5. (line mustve moved this morning in one of my drafts,, i promise i checked.) thanks.

      • HitTheHorns

No worries, thanks. FYI – the body of your write up still says 4.5. After I emailed you, it changed to 5 and reverted back for some reason.

        • strange. i edited it from the phone and sure enough had to edit it again from the laptop.
[btw, it just occurred to me that i can embed a pdf… that’s the plan moving forward.]

I’m down with the early action:
    Georgia State -4 over ACU

    • swig

      2) Navy +16 over tOSU

      3) Wisconsin +5 over LSU !?! ESSAY !?!

Why the f* not? Spoiler alert; the following contains no useful analysis. Is either team ranked? No idea. Houston is pretty close to Louisiana, and kind of far from Wisconsin. Would a badger even stand a chance in a fight versus a tiger? I say no. Gumbo is much better than bratwurst. Irregardless, I will make the emotional play and take the BigTen over the SEC (not usually a good idea) and the points (wish there were more). I am looking forward to the challenge of writing one hundred words every week, that is a lot of words. Go Bucks!!!

    • swig

0-6 is still in play! More random gambol.

      4) Appalation State +34.5 over Michicgan

      5) Nebraska -21 over Florida Atlantic

      6) Louisville, -3.5 over Miami (FL)

  • I’m jumping in on Georgia State -4 at home vs. ACU tonite.
The rest of the picks to follow.

  • Acto wanted to post his essay early due to travel, re-posting here. (The line is SCAR -10.5.).

A&M has had and lost the best Left Tackles in the last two drafts.
Word on the streets is that Cedric Ogbuehie is better than Joeckel and Matthews. The local pundits even say that because of his “superior physicality”, he will be far better than Jake Matthews. There is a reason that these chumps are sports journalists in a podunk, cowtown like College Station and not making the big bucks in Bristol. They are a bunch of idiots and they also think they are using the word “Physicality” correctly. Sadly enough, in this case they may inadvertently be using it correctly, but I prefer to give Cedric the benefit of the doubt. (I would love to have them use the word simplistic in a sentence.) Cedric has talent, but he cannot hold a candle to Matthews. There is a very important component to pass blocking consisting of reading defenses, scheme blocking and scouting your opponent. Last year Matthews frequently coached Ogbuehie pre-play, now with no Matthews and Ogbuehi moving to the blind side, the A&M line will make mistakes that will put their inexperienced QB in jeopardy. Ogbuehi is a terrific run blocker, as are most of his fellow linemen, so the Aggie’s only hope is on the ground. Not as in “on the ground” where their QB shall spend most of the game, I mean with an effective rushing game.

A&M had terrific talent, they had three players drafted in the first round, but one must remember, they had three players drafted in the first round and while they may be replaced, the first game of the season will not be enough time to groom their replacements.
A&M and our JFF guy are still living off of one good game against Alabama. This may very well be the “what have you done for me lately” year in the land of the psilocybin fields.
The biggest thing A&M has going for them is another fantastic punter, a great punter is a tremendously valuable asset and A&M will really rely upon him. (That does not bode well for their ability to matriculate the ball downfield. With all due respect to Hank Stram.) Also, there is not a clear QB of quality to replace JFF. They have a QB who can run and a QB who throws it a little, and they may form some hybrid offense designed to use both QB’s…. no, wait, that is the Browns. oops.

South Carolina did lose a better QB than A&M, but they have an exceedingly adequate replacement with plenty of experience. Experience shall mean a great deal in game one and adequate is a big plus as well. Many people are lamenting the loss of Jadaveon Clown. OVERRATED!! Connor Shaw and Bruce Ellington were SCAR’s big losses, they do however have a quality running back and they are loaded with a tremendous depth chart of adequate players.

South Carolina is an easy pick here.
