Zack Martin to the Dolphins #KRM

USP NCAA FOOTBALL: PINSTRIPE BOWL-RUTGERS VS NOTRE S FBC USA NY

Martin seeks to join Eifert, Floyd, H.Smith, Quinn, and Faine as a first round Domer.

Trashycamaro is back with his second pick in the KRM.  His earlier pick with Bridgewater to Vikes found here.  He also rebuts my comment from yesterday and he makes a good point in so doing…

************

Despite what you read in the last post, this is a slam dunk pick.  The Dolphins grab the best offensive lineman left on the board, Zack Martin, Tackle from Notre Dame.1  The only other pick would be Xavier Su’a-Filo, the consensus top guard in the draft.

The best offensive lineman on the board is the pick for two reasons.

Reason #1

9ac627e3-63dc-4608-9e57-d2a2ac0a72e2_e0116rt

(Yes that was a cheap excuse to liven up the page with a pic of Tannehill’s wife).

Charles-Clay

Charles Clay. Just in case anyone wants to ramp up a “FBs, irrelevant or no?” convo.

The Dolphins really need to decide if Tannehill is a QB for the future.  They need to determine if his Football Outsider ranking between Kellen Clemens and Michael Vick is an indication of his ability or an indication of the 30th ranked offensive line in pass protection.

Of course you could also point to a lackluster set of offensive weapons, aside from the Claymaker.  Wallace was a bust as a first year free agent signee, coming in at 77th in DVOA for wide receivers. Receivers 2-4 on the depth chart all missed significant time, and the running game was no help.

So it would seem the Dolphins can go any number of ways on offense, except…

Reason #2

richie-incognito-jonathan-martin

Oh yeah, those guys…

john-jerry

Unindicted co-conspirator Jerry. 106 mentions in Wells Report.

The Dolphins can’t possibly get away from this Incognito/Martin silliness fast enough.

Another starting offensive lineman from last year was also cut (John Jerry) for a combination of poor play and participation in the events that precipitated Martin leaving the team.  Despite signing two lineman in free agency, there are huge holes on the offensive line, and Martin projects well as a left tackle in a couple years.

Of course, there is the consideration of bringing in a Tackle named “Martin,” which is a not crazy reason for the Dolphins choose Su’a-Filo instead.

Ok Trashy, when you put it that way, it makes sense.

Next up, the return of Jeff Rich for a local take on the Arizona Cardinals.

  1. In case you’re wondering how ND alums have fared in the NFL —like I was— the answer is actually better than you might think.  In the last ten years there’s actually one All-Pro and two Pro-Bowlers out of South Bend.  Way to go Justin Tuck and Kyle Rudolph, you exceeded my expectations! [back]

Really good discussion on difference between ready players and OL prospects. Tucker podcast with Cosell.

Martin projects well as a left tackle in a couple years.

We are in the 1st round. In general, drafting guys who are projects (and Z.Martin does not look great, he most certainly is a project) is not ideal. It can make sense at times and I do believe the Dolphins have a big need on the OL. The way I explain my feelings on Zack Martin is pretty simple: Martin is not nearly as good of a prospect as Cordy Glenn was and this draft is better overall (except QB) than the 2012 draft. Glenn went in the 2nd round.

Anyways, if Zack Martin is going to succeed, then he needs to be in a ZBS. His main strength is that he is extremely quick off the snap. He struggles at times once engaged, but he gets engaged quickly (classic overachieving ZBS OL). Good news for this pick: By firing Jim Turner and promoting John Benton, the Dolphins just put a guy with extensive experience in the ZBS (via Houston) as their OL coach. I am not sure if Bill Lazor prefers that system (WCO guy who was Shurmurs QB coach in Philly – okay, okay, Chip’s QB coach but that falls under Pat’s OC position), but it would at least help make this selection make more sense if it happens.

Personally, I still think it is a reach based specifically on need. I think the Dolphins could trade down quite a few slots and still get Martin or get a LT w/o T-rex arms of Zack in Morgan Moses (he’s got sloppy feet though).

Also, I love Sua-Filo, but he’s not a ZBS guy IMO (slow first step, but great hands, feet and leverage afterwards). So, while I’m not keen on drafting OG in the 1st round, if the Dolphins pick him then they are likely keeping their power-OL style.

Martin projects well as a LT down the line but is currently the top RT and has the positional versatility to be a top guard in the draft as well.

As far as zbs vs. man blocking – I don’t know near enough football to comment.

I have not seen a single mock with anyone other than Lewan or Martin when available.

yes, you certainly could be correct in that they will pick him. but, man, I just do not get the hype on him (which is what I was projecting). He doesn’t have the measurables and watching him, he was just okay. I really think he’s getting boosted up from a mediocre OL class this year.
