Yes of course the Maine Red Claws are a real basketball team.

How about a Cheddar Bay NCAA pool you ask?  Sure why not.

Rather than futzing around with a homegrown app or plugin or spreadsheet… let’s just go with the winner.  I’ve always loved Yahoo’s tech proficiency with their sports games so let’s use them.

Registration.

  • Paypal is super usually easy; no stragglers, kk?
  • If your Paypal email is different from the email you’re using in the Yahoo Pool page, give me a heads up or note it in the submittal, thanks.
Deadlines.

Noon on Thursday to create a bracket; no edits after 12:15pm.

  • For Tourney Pick’em, after March 20, 2014 at 12:15pm EDT, things are set in stone — meaning that no changes or additions to brackets can be made, either by a group commissioner or by Yahoo Sports Customer Care.
Dollars.
  • $20 entry, all fees paid out in prizes.
  • 80% to winner; 20% to second place.
  • If we get over 30 entries, we’ll pay out 70-20-10.
Scoring system.

Fibonacci points-by-round with upset pick bonus.

  • Fibonacci (2-3-5-8-13-21) – A nicely balanced scoring system based on a famous mathematical progression. Slightly favors getting earlier picks correct versus later picks.
  • Bonus points for upset picks (4-4-2-1-1-1) – Add importance to early rounds. Works best with Progressive and Straight scoring.

.

That’s all I’ve got for today.  We’ll be back in a day or so to take stock of the Browns’ free agent moves (hint: we like!) and to track them against the monies we allocated by position a week or so ago (hint: Browns are on track and the estimates used were fairly accurate).

    A few years ago I took Cornell to advance to the 16 because I liked their guards and that was in a pool where there was no advantage to picking underdogs. Not a lot of money, but it is still nice to win.
    I picked before I read the rules and now I want to go back and pick Harvard and three other underdogs.
    Perhaps I should stay with the “NEVER change your picks” rule.
    This is the first I have heard of an underdog advantage.
    Is this common?
    I did the math and everyone should pick 9’s and 10’s. I am an idiot so I shall stay with my original misendeavors.

      I played one at a casino a few years back and you got the amount of points for picking a dog that was the amount of the difference in the seed times the round. first round dog pick 12 over 5 was two points for the win, plus seven bonus points X1 (first round) 2nd round 5 over 4 was four points plus 1 bonus X2. I would have won the whole thing if an 88% FT shooter from Butler hadn’t of missed the front end of a 1&1 leaving the door open for Billy Donovans first championship. Butler was final four worthy that year and I was going to ride them.

    Mark is in!

      Let me get this straight, a lower seeded team picked in the first round is worth 2 points plus 4 bonus points right? Third round, a lower seeded team would be worth 5 points plus two bonus points, Correct?

      • first rd upset winners: 2 (win) + 4 (bonus) = 6;
        2nd rd upset winners: 3 + 4 = 7;
        sweet 16: 5 + 2 = 7;
        quarters: 8 +1 = 9;
        semis: 13 +1 = 14;
        champ game: 21 +1 = 22.

        (if the faves win, there is no bonus.)

    i tried to sign up but yahoo kept insisting on me giving my cell phone number to send me a text (and they admit it will be used for future marketing). i am not a fan of ruining my cell phone with junk texts/calls. why can’t there be some way around this? am I missing something?

    • Ugh, you’re right. I didn’t even think twice when it asked. I hate cell phone junk also. I don’t know if there’s a way around it but if you want to use my (already tainted) cell number to register, I can pass the code to you…

      I have a couple of yahoo accounts and I use my work mobile numbers, you may use either one if you wish. Please let me know.

  • Petefranklin

    All right… Im an old crabby man, but I can’t sign up. Help please.

    • Petefranklin

      Do we need Yahoo accts?

      • It looks like you do. :-/
        You can always make a hilarious magnum69@ymail.com account because 69 is hilarious…

        If there’s a strong want to move it to ESPN or CBS or some other site, that would be fine with me but I think we might encounter the same sorts of probs.

        (FWIW, the WordPress bracket plug-ins I saw were not ready; tht’s why I’m not just trying to host it here.)

  • Petefranklin

    I’m definitely in.
    Mrs Franklin too!!
    Love the under dog point system.
